The dinner party is six people deep. Two women on the couch, three men standing near the kitchen island, one very confused houseguest holding a plate of cheese. And Bramble? He has planted himself squarely on the feet of a man he met eleven minutes ago.
The man does not like dogs. He has said so. Twice.
His owner, meanwhile, is standing four feet away holding a bag of the good treats, being ignored with a thoroughness that borders on artistic.
So what gives? Do beagles actually have a preference when it comes to men or women, or is Bramble just being Bramble?
The Short Answer Nobody Wants to Hear
Beagles do not have a hardwired preference for male or female owners.
There is no gene for it. No breed standard clause that reads "shall favor the tall gentleman with the deep voice." Nothing in the pack hound history of this breed points toward a sex-based bias in bonding.
What beagles do have is a preference for the person who is most interesting to them at any given moment, which is a very different thing and considerably more chaotic.

People who move quickly, gesture broadly, or stand over a dog can trigger avoidance behavior in a sensitive hound. People who crouch, move slowly, and let the dog approach get rewarded with a beagle draped across their lap.
Statistically, men are on average taller and often move with more force. That is not a preference for women, that is physics meeting a fourteen inch dog.

Forget the male versus female question entirely. Here is what actually moves the needle.
Who Controls the Food
This is a beagle. Let’s not overcomplicate things.
The person who fills the bowl, drops the crumbs, and keeps treats in their jacket pocket occupies a special and permanent place in the beagle heart. Food is not just reinforcement for this breed, it is a core personality trait.

Who Handles the Walks
Beagles need to sniff the way humans need to breathe.
The person who provides that outlet, especially long meandering walks where the dog gets to actually follow a scent trail instead of being dragged past every interesting bush, becomes deeply associated with joy.
Whoever holds the leash holds the relationship. Beagles measure love in the number of interesting smells you allow them to investigate.
Early Socialization Windows
A beagle puppy socialized primarily around women may show hesitance around men later, and vice versa. This is well documented across breeds and has nothing to do with any innate preference.
It is simply a matter of what the puppy learned to consider normal between roughly three and sixteen weeks.

Beagles are pack animals with a genuine need for company. Left to sort out their own social hierarchy, they will often designate one primary human as the anchor.
Usually this is the person present most often, not necessarily the person who does the most.
Someone who works from home and simply exists in the same room all day can outrank the person who does every walk and every feeding. Proximity is powerful.

Beagles are curious to the point of absurdity. A brand new person carries brand new information, and that information is often more compelling than the familiar smell of the human who lives in the house.
This is temporary. Your beagle has not left you for a stranger. It just needs to file a report.

Worth noting separately: beagles frequently gravitate toward kids, and this crosses sex lines completely.
Children are at eye level, they move unpredictably, they drop food constantly, and they smell like everything they touched that day.
From a beagle’s perspective, a child is basically a walking sensory theme park.
If You Want to Be the Favorite
Good news. This is entirely within your control, and it has nothing to do with anything you were born with.
Feed the dog. Not just meals, but training treats scattered through the day for good choices.
Take the sniff walks. The long ones. The boring ones where you stand still for ninety seconds while your beagle investigates a fence post.
Get low. Sit on the floor. Let the dog come to you rather than reaching for it.
Speak warmly. You do not need a cartoon voice, just genuine warmth in your tone.
Be consistent. Same rules today as yesterday. Beagles respect people who do not wobble.
And keep in mind that beagle affection is rarely exclusive. This is a breed built to work in packs of thirty or more, which means the capacity for multiple attachments is baked deep into the temperament.
